Africa

This page only covers Morocco. I haven’t been able to explore much of Africa yet but I hope to.

Tagines

The first thing you’ll notice in Morocco is that tagines are everywhere! It’s a typical north African dish named after the pot it’s cooked in. Beef, chicken, vegetable tagine are on every menu. After 3 days there I was totally tagined out.

My favourite is chicken cous cous tagine. The one in the picture is from one of the many rooftop restaurants overlooking the Medina in Marrakech.

While I was in Morocco I noticed a lot of people got food poisoning. However, I remained ok but this was because I took precautions, like choosing vegetarian options over meat and avoiding raw egg. I also used antibacterial hand gel. I did see people ordering seafood in the desert, which was just a silly risk.

Wine

Morocco is a Muslim country which means buying alcohol is difficult and not readily available. But as I’m a huge red wine fan I was able to track some down and bought a bottle of Kasbah Prestige Rough Maroc for €6. It was dry but drinkable. I recommend it if you want to try a quick glass of Moroccan wine without going to too much trouble.

While walking around Jemaa el-Fnaa, Marrakech at night I was able to sample some of the local delicacies.

Snails

These were served up still in their shells and you use a toothpick you pull them out. They have a chewy texture and mainly taste of the spices they’re cooked in. A small bowl is only 5 MAD (about €0.50) so they’re worth a try.

Juice

There are dozens of stalls in the Jemaa el-Fnaa selling fruit juice, as you walk past they try and catch your eye and call you over. There are lots of options, from fresh orange juice to onion juice.

My personal favourite was orange and avocado juice, it tastes of orange with a refreshing after taste and it’s super healthy.
